Cinnamon Rolls

Monday, September 7, 2009

Oh boy. I have been so busy lately now that's school's started and unfortunately my blog has to suffer because of it. So this will be a short post. Well, I say that a lot and it doesn't happen anyway. But really, I have an English test on the Iliad I should be studying for...

Okay, so cinnamon rolls. Yes warm, soft, delightfully cinnamon-y cinnamon rolls. I wish I could say that's what I ate, but it's not. Long story short, (remember, I've got an English test tomorrow) I have seen rave reviews about The Bread Baker's Apprentice's recipe for cinnamon rolls. I've been craving them and they are the prefect breakfast item (he he).

I don't know if it was not having a stand mixer or what but the dough would not cooperate. No matter how much kneading or adding of flour, without overdoing it, that dough was just plain oopy and goopy. But, I trudged on leaving my hands in my fellow bloggers instructions.

I added pecans to have the rolls. I was unhappy about the mixture for the filling. I like when you combine melted butter with the cinnamon sugar, but not in this recipe it doesn't.

Ready for the fridge

I should mention that my mom has an ABSOLUTELY, INCREDIBLE cinnamon roll recipe!!! But, we wanted to try something different and also something we could make comparisons with.

After they had rise out of the fridge the next morning

No comparison. I may have over cooked the pecan ones but, YUCK! They were really flat and almost danish-y tasting but not in a good way. Very tough and dry is what I would call them. Yeah, really dry. The glaze was nice, though.

They second batch, or the ones without pecans, we baked for a shorter time, which really helped. Although it was half the recommended time. Still, these second batchers were better but not even close to the cinnamon-y goodness of my mom's secret recipe. I'll definitely have to post that one soon to get over this disappointment.

So to sum up:
-dry
-not worth the work
-not worth the long rising time
-yucky?

It's pretty harsh I know. Honestly, though, I bet it was just me. I set high expectations and I like my rolls a certain way. I'm sure to somebody else they'd be just fine. So don't be turned off by them. Or you can be, cause my mom's are way better. No melted butter?? Come on!

Okay done, I swear!

Sometimes it's best to just stick with what works. I should know, I'm always trying new recipes just to make sure I'm not missing out. Usually, it's the tried-and-true one that wins out.

I completely agree, Lauren. I'm always wondering if I'm missing out by not trying a different version of a recipe and just sticking with what I know I like. But hey, you never know until you try.
